Musang King Durian originally known as (Raja Kunyit) Turmeric King, originated from the east coast state of Kelantan in Malaysia. According to the history, an immigrant from Southern China, Chung Chun Seng came to Raya lsland in Kelantan around 1790 in a boat with few friends. The Raya lsland is located in the middle of Kelantan River. According to the great-grandson of Chung Chun Seng, Chung Ting Bun, his great-grandfather planted the durian tree in the island along with other fruits in 1890, unfortunately the durian tree has died of lightning strike in 1974.

A farmer known as Wee Chong Beng, managed plant around 2 hectors of Raja Kunyit {Turmeric King) saplings in 1970. lnitially, the fruits were sold around the Tanah Merah town only among the local Chinese due to the bitter sweet taste of the fruit.

Wee Chong Beng has tried to register the Raja Kunyit variety of durian with Malaysia’s Agriculture Department but he succeeded only after 20 years in 1993 as D197 variety. In the 80’s, farmers started planting the Raja Kunyit durian variety in the state of Pahang and also in other area of Kelantan in Gua Musang.

The durian fruits from Pahang and Gua Musang were started to sold in Kuala Lumpur and other major towns in Malaysia. The farmers from Gua Musang has promoted the Raja Kunyit as MUSANG KING DURIAN. This is how the name MUSANG KING DURIAN well known as its today.

With the new name and improvement through R & D, the fruit quality and yield were increased and the fruit become extremely popular rlot only in Malaysia but other countries in the region like Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Hong Kong and China.
